Workshop Content
This practical, skills-based workshop isto
professionals, and is targeted toward those in the
multiagency-multidisciplinary community who may suspect
or become involved with a suspected or confirmed MBP
maltreatment case –for example: Child Protection staff,
child welfare treatment/ongoing unit staff, child
welfare placement unit staff, adoption staff, Adult
Protective Services staff, law enforcement, public and
private physical and mental health care professionals,
hospital staff, school staff (including pre-school/day
care), emergency responders, attorneys, judges,
students, etc.
Description: Munchausen by Proxy (MBP) is a label
for a pattern of behavior in which caretakers
deliberately exaggerate and/or fabricate and/or induce
physical and/or psychological/behavioral/mental health
problems in others. Children or adults can be victims,
and MBP presents in both inpatient and outpatient
settings. No longer considered rare, MBP manifests as
physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect –
or a combination. MBP identification, intervention, case
planning, and case management are all very different
from other kinds of abuse/neglect. Few professionals,
regardless of discipline (even those highly competent in
their own areas of expertise) have the specialized
knowledge and skills necessary for involvement in
suspected or confirmed MBP cases.
